We received this post to our FAQ section of
the website, and thought we would pass along our response. Remember,
any adjusting technique can cause muscular pain reactions, no matter
how light, so tell your patients up front that as they respond to care
they may feel uncomfortable here and there. As well, if you haven't
looked into learning tonal technique adjusting, consider looking into
the myriad of "low-force" approaches that are available at numerous
seminars.

Hi
I injured my neck over a month ago, and I have symptoms of whiplash,
that is damaged soft tissue around the neck, and a while back I
started getting lower back pain. It's been quite severe at times.Could
that be the result of my neck injury? I haven't had any trouble with
my back before. Could chiropractic treatment help?
Thank you

Good Morning D.
Thanks for your post to the Chiropractic Awareness Council website.
Your question to us was "Could chiropractic treatment help?". I
interpret this to mean that you feel injuries sustained to your neck may
be responsible for various symptoms you are experiencing, and are
looking for someone to help you make sense of your situation.
It is unfortunate that you have sustained an injury that has overwhelmed
your body's innate ability to self regulate and heal itself. This can
occur in two ways, a tremendous stress to the body in a single episode
(such as falling off a roof), or as is more common, a group of small
stresses building up over time (job demands, family issues, recreational
pursuits...basically the trials and tribulations of life).
It is important that you realize that symptoms you experience are much
like the dashboard light on your car. They tell you something is
happening, but not always what, and not always where. For example, the
light can come on because you are low on oil, or your battery charge is
weak, or the engine is running hot, or the lights in your dashboard
aren't working. Four totally different causes, same warning light.
Therefore, chiropractic does not focus on the symptoms.
Rather than try to make the light go out by putting a piece of tape
across it or taking the light out entirely, a chiropractor will try to
determine why the light has come on in the first place. If the cause of
your problem can be related to the presence of vertebral subluxation and
accompanying nerve interference (which in simple terms is an overwhelmed
electrical system), then chiropractic can help you.
The only way to determine this would be for a chiropractor to perform a
detailed assessment of your spine. This will entail numerous physical
testing procedures which may include flexibility and strength tests,
postural distortion analysis (both visual and xray), nerve system scans
and other neurological tests.
I would suggest that you check our "Find A Chiropractor" service at the
website, or make inquiry of friends and colleagues as to a local
chiropractor they utilize, and have a full, detailed spinal evaluation
to determine if you have the presence of vertebral subluxation. If this
analysis does indicate the presence of vertebral subluxation, then
chiropractic care would be appropriate for you, regardless of the
presenting symptom or condition.
