CAC/FAQs:
"My husband is thinking of becoming a chiropractor"
Hello,
I have a question. My husband is thinking of becoming a chiropractor.
We live in Newark, CA and he might go to Palmer College of
Chiropractic. wanted to know, if a person does not want to open
his/her own chiropractic practice, are there jobs available?
If he goes to Palmer, it will cost $65,000, do you think the
investment is worth it? Is chiropractic a good field?
We will appreciate any help and input from you.
Have a good day.
Thanks,
S. V.
Good Evening Ms V.
Thank you for your post to the Chiropractic Awareness Council Website.
It is exciting to see someone else gearing up for entering the most
fantastic profession on the planet!
As for your questions, here are some answers as well as some other
points to ponder. Please recognize when I say to you, I am referring
to both you and your husband, as this is a decision that should be
made jointly.
1) As you live in Newark, I would suggest you could reduce your costs
and increase your exposure to an incredible education by checking out
what many consider to be the pre-eminent chiropractic college in not
only the USA, but the world: Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward
(just up the road from you). I cannot speak highly enough of either
its
president, Dr. Gerard Clum, its staff or the chiropractic education
they
provide, as this is my alma mater. It provided me with a solid basic
science educational base filtered through a traditional chiropractic
vitalistic philosophy. But perhaps more importantly, it gave me the
clinical skills to truly "hit the ground running" upon graduation.
2) You mention "is chiropractic a good field" and "jobs available".
Know that chiropractic is more than a field, and much more than a job.
It is a total health and wellness lifestyle that provides you an
excellent opportunity to change people's lives and make a decent
living
at the same time.
3) Upon graduation, there are many options of practice available. Many
open solo offices, others go into associateship or independent
contractor positions where they work for someone else, still others go
into partnerships. The choice is really up to you depending on you.
4) The investment you make is worth it, because it is an investment in
your future. My debt load was almost 10 times the figure you quoted in
your note, once you factor in the cost of buying an existing practice,
upgrading the clinical equipment in the practice and buying a new
house. But everything will be totally paid down in ten years. So from
a financial standpoint, I have never even had the slightest worry.
However, more importantly, from a fulfillment standpoint, I am rich
beyond my wildest dreams, as the changes that I help people experience
is so rewarding that words do not do it justice. And I earn a good
income to boot.
I hope that this helps you in making your decision. I made mine over
25 years ago when I was still in high school. I pursued my dream and
am now living it. I have absolutely no regrets, and can think of no
other avenue to help people that pays such high dividends, both
monetarily and emotionally. To find out if it is right for you,
contact the nice folks at Life West through their website "

Sincerely,
Dr. Steven J. Silk
