"the DC adjusted me rather forcefully"

Hello,

I was in a minor fender-bender recently and have been seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis (3x per week). Things were coming along fine when, about a week ago, the DC adjusted me rather forcefully, the result being a couple of my ribs were bruised. I was in extreme pain the first six nights, then the pain started to subside (after treatment from a different chiropractor).

Understandably I am rather upset because his rough handling actually CAUSED me an injury. Do you have any comments or suggestions?

Thank you

M. McK.

Good Afternoon Ms McK.,

Thank you for your post to the Chiropractic Awareness Council website. My interpretation of your note is that you feel that a chiropractor has caused you discomfort through his care. If I understand this correctly, you had undergone a series of adjustments that were quite comfortable and you were quite happy with prior to the incident described by you. Your question is "Do you have any comments or suggestions?". Being so far removed from the situation, there is obviously no way to definitively explain your experience. However, I can give you some observations.

As a practitioner, if a patient or wellness client was uncomfortable with any type of technique interaction, I would be dismayed if they didn't let me know about their concerns and discuss alternative approaches which might be more amenable to them. As a wellness-care client myself for over 25 years, if I had this experience with my own chiropractor, I would mention the incident, and hopefully determine why it was uncomfortable the one time, and whether or not it was an indication for trying a different adjusting technique approach, or simply a normal response to care.

The truth is, sometimes even the gentlest technique will cause muscle soreness as the body responds to positive changes in the nervous system following the adjustment. In fact, sometimes muscle soreness is celebrated as a sign of successfully reducing nerve interference patterns that accompany vertebral subluxation complexes. Being uncomfortable after an adjustment is not always a bad thing. I hope this helps you make sense of your experience.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven J. Silk
